When you were "quoted", depending on who it was by, there was probably a 15%-25% mark-up added over the wholesale price. Your Contractor's getting a little piece on the hardware, and that's perfectly normal. The pricing you found on-line, and the quoted price, are all in the right ballpark, it all depends on what you want to do. What would happen if you brought a water pump to your auto mechanic and asked him to install it on your car. You're gonna pay one way or the other. I'm indifferent about this Manufacturer, nothing too great, nothing too bad. Be careful comparing pool heaters and home boilers, it's apple to oranges. Pool heaters usually don't live too long largely due to the high chlorine and dissolved oxygen content of the pool water, which eats heat exchangers unless you go real "high-end".
