I have seen problems like this and it does nee further investigation. One solution is to use a high quality soft seated check valve after the pump. (Some people use two check valves, one near the boiler and one near the BF pump) When the pump shuts off if saturated temperature water works its way back to the pump through a non-functioning check valve, the water will flash and cause thermal water hammer. I have replaced cheap swing checks with the 'silent' type with soft seats that give bubble type shut-off and have eliminated problems like this.
