: Should you manually blowdown offline boilers?

There are two types of blowdowns: Surface (continuous) blowdowns and bottom blowdowns. When the boiler is in use the surface blow should be in service and adjusted slightly when needed. You can use your boiler water conductiivity readings as a guide. Too high conductivity may mean you need to increase the c.b.d. flow...low conductivity means you need to possibly decrease or shut the c.b.d. valve. Bottom blowdowns can be done daily, weekly, or as needed while the boiler is online although you may want lower the boiler pressure or firing rate a little maybe to low fire. This is done to remove sludge and sediment, etc. Talk to your water treatment representative so he can explain this stuff to you.
