You should blow down the boiler to prevent the collection of sediment on the bottom of the boiler shell. Excess sediment build up can cause corrosion, and can also prevent proper heat transfer which can have adverse effects on the shell metallurgy. It is advised to blow down the boiler while it is offline or at the lowest possible pressure.
