A by-passed steam trap will not add hardness to your system, as it is the nice evaporated pure steam and condensate that is in the bypass. However, some facilities have dilution (cooling) tanks or add cooling water to condensate pump receivers if the water gets too hot. This water can add hardness, and a bypassed steam trap will eject steam into the tank making it very hot.
