: : : : I am currently working as a "temporarily assigned" stationary fireman for the State of Illinois. Without going into too much detail, my workplace has a boiler house and I was able to temporarily transfer there and train as a S.F. and now work on shift without supervision. Illinois does not require a stationary fireman/boiler operator license to hold this position. I am currently enrolled in the S.E.I. course as a means to both learn more about boiler operation but I would also would like to take the licensing exam for any state or city and obtain a license from any jurisdiction in order to build my resume for the future posting of a permanent position at my current work site. These positions are extremely rare and very competitive when they are offered and I am trying to ensure that I meet every possible qualification for a future permanent position.
: : : : I have searched the internet and see many states and cities require a license but can not find any information on how/where/if I can test for one. Can anybody pass along any information on who to contact and sit for an licensing exam ANYWHERE?
: : : : Thanks in advance.

: : : Every state / ;ocal will have their own licensing requirements. Check with local authorities. Here is one for New York City:

: : More follow up:

: : Ohio publishes a "body of knowledge" for boiler operators at http://www.com.state.oh.us/dic/Documents/HighPressureEngineersLicenseExam10506.pdf
: : They recommend a couple of reference books that you can study from.

: : I also recommend "Boiler Operator's Workbook", available from American Technical Publishers at www.go2atp.com. The author, R. Dean Wilson, operates a training company, Steamworks LLC, that trains operators in Ohio to help them pass the tests.

: Thanks for the info. I have already studied the "Boiler Operators Workbook" and am finishing up a course through the Steam Engineering Institute based on "Steam Plant Operation" by Woodruff and Lammers. As mentioned, what I am now looking for is a means to obtain an operators license (for any state or municipality) but my problem has been finding contact information for the licensing oversight authorities of locales requiring a license.
: I did find Ohios exam application through your link to Ohio's body of knowledge. Thanks. If need be and I am an accepted examinee, I will travel to ohio to take the test. However, I am much closer to St. Louis MO and would like to find info for the city licensing authority there...but no luck so far.
: You've been a big help, If I can't find anything closer to sit for soon, I will try to sit for an Ohio license. Thanks again.
: If anyone else has contact info on other locales offering licensing exams, please chime in.

It appears you may have to contact the state fire marshall office @ the exam. Found a link for the regs for boilers, it may be a start:

good luck
