Taken from Tom "Speedball1," from Allexperts.com

Gas hot water heater, right?? So if it's a gas heater let me take a stab at it. For a klunk, bang or "horn blast"(don'tcha just love those technical terms?) you have mineral build up in the bottom of your tank. What happens is that water collects on the floor of the heater under the mineral buildup. Whe4n the gas comes on it turns the trapped water to steam. The noise you hear is the steam escaping from under the mineral build up. You need to flush not drain. To flush out your heater attach a hose on the boiler drain at the base of the tank. With the pressure still on open the boiler drain and let it run under pressure untill the water runs clear. If the build is bad you may need to shut off the heater and drain it and pour a jug of CRL or solvent down in there and let it set overnight. Next morning flush again. If you do this every month that Heater might just out last you. I have a 30 gal. water heater that is built into my kitchen cabinets that is 52 years old and still gives me plenty of hot water. I flush it every month. It only takes a minute and it sure saves me from replacing it every 10 years or so. Hope this helps. If there more questions, I'm as close as a click. Good luck and thank you for rating this answer. TOM
