Frank You ill need to study the Folloing Books. Steam Plant Operation 5th, 6th, 7th edition is fine. Get a copy of the NYS Boiler Code You need to study the Low Pressure Boiler Code # 4. You can rite to the NYS Department of Labor and they will mail you a copy or go to the DOL Web site. They have the code on the web site. You ill get at least 20 questions on the low pressure boiler code. As for training. IUOE Local 30 holds a class once a year. Also check out Con Edsion Training Center in Astoria Queens they also hold a class. If you can get your hands on a copy of the con edsion steam notes they are excellent for studying the exam. To get an idea on the type of questions to know if you can get a copy of Boiler Room Questions & Answers which is out of print but if you can get a copy it will give you an idea about the ritten test. Know all about Boilers, Low & High Pressure, Fuels including coal, electrical, turbines, water treatment, aulillary equipment, working a shift. These are the areas you will be tested on. Also read up mon steam engines they usually throw a question from there as well. Hope this helps.I took my test years ago and I no longer have the material but thats what I studied and passed on first shot.
