Is this the same butterfly valve you were afraid of thightening under pressure? Are you sure it's not a globe valve? I may be wrong but I have never seen a butterfly valve used in a steam line. And to answer your previuos question about thightening a leaking gasket under pressure I would of course use some judgement as to how bad the leak is. If it stops the leak great but sooner or later you need to replace the gasket. As for the flashlight,a visual is great but if this is superheated steam well, but he may have been checking to see if there is any physical damage to the valve that might lead to a failure. I would be asking my boss these questions if I felt there was a danger. There is no such thing as a dumb question and if your boss is rediculing you for that they need to remember what it was like when they were learning. Safety is first and of the utmost.
