Well, there is no State licensing of boiler operators in NY State. There ARE cities, such as NYC, that license boiler operators for plants under certain operating/design conditions, such as High Temp Hot Water, High Pressure Steam (>15 PSIG), LP plants above certain threshold BTU/hr or HP ratings, etc. Frankly, I don't know exactly which cities license, but I would "guess" NYC, White Plains, Buffalo, maybe Rochester and Syracuse. You'll have to check the jurisdiction you plan on working in. By the way, outside of these jurisdictions in NY State, it is perfectly legal to operate any plant, of any size, at any conditions, completely unmanned. Maybe not prudent, but it is legal. All the owner has to do is satisfy their insurance company and the State Boiler Inspector.
