: Unfortunately, it can not be done on line. You must take a written exam and providing you pass that, you must then take an oral exam with 3 state inspectors ( for 2nd and 1st Class engineer licenses). The oral exam is usually 2-4 weeks after the written. It is a very comprehensive test. Go on line to the Massachusets Department of Public Safety web site and look at the information in Chapter 146 pertaining to licensing of engineers and fireman. I live in Mass and I help students prep for the various exams and there is a lot of info you need to know that you probably did not get in the Navy.

Thank you Tom
What is the average time frame it take from start to finish to get your licence? Also is there a difference between 2nd class fireman and 2nd class stationary engineer licence? Where are you located and what does your services cost? I have found an online course to help prep you for the test. Do you think this is a good idea? It cost about $1300.
Thank you again
Bob
