hello---I have a steam boiler/one pipe system and in our kitchen is a baseboard radiator(with fins) and we are looking into replacing it with a more tradtional upright that can be somewhat flush to the wall (stick out 6" or so). This morning a contractor/salesmen came out to quote the replacment and I about fell out of my chair when he gave me the price. He quoted $2500 to remove the old radiator and replace with the upright. There would be some minor plumbing to replace a coupling where the baseboard drained back into the steam line (a poor design). Anyways is this possible??? A new boiler will cost me $6000 and take a couple of days. And this is just one stinking radiator--no aspestos abatement. Please give me a sanity check!
