It gets confusing. Let's assume we are talking about fired units. A steam generator is a boiler, but not all boilers produce steam. Some boilers heat hot water and other boilers heat various types of liquid, such as oil to be pumped to a process system. I teach a class on the construction and operation of boilers and we call the class Steam Generators, because we focus on high pressure steam boilers.
