Aside from system improvement one primary reason plants check traps is to garner the savings from repairing traps that are blowing through. There is always an excellent payback in this repair.
However, there is a cost involved with surveying the traps to find the bad ones.
A minimum survey and repair cycle should take place once a year. For high pressures or critical operations, I have seen and recommended a four time per year cycle. The individual plant economics (survey & repair cost vs. steam savings) should dictate the frequency of checks.
