Please post the serial number of the water heater....all it including dashes. From that I can usually tell the date of manufacture, but not the date of actual install.
Electric domestic water heaters can last up to 40 years depending on water quality. In some areas, they only last 5-10. Gas fired heaters can rust out from both the inside and outside due to the effect of having corrosion occuring on both sides of the pressure vessel.
You will discover that water heater makers who offer a longer warranty only do so cause their tank is made of thicker metal, not because it's "Better".
