Our plant PRVs sootblowing steam from 900 psi down to 400 psi. This is a recovery boiler so the sootblowing steam is high, approximately 40 to 50 klb/hr. The steam is desuperheated, however, the desuperheater is prior to the PRV, when typically the desuperheater is after the PRV. Changing this would reduire greater justification than "its typically done this way". I do realize that the amount of desuperheating is limited because the steam will increase is superheat across the PRV. What are the pro's and con's of this setup and are they strong enough to spend money to correct?
