: Over fire air , depending on type of boiler , ensures there is sufficient O2 for complete combustion. Also because over fire air is directed down onto the combustion zone it can help control flame impingement not to mention causes turbulance that helps in mixing volatile gases. Over fire air is used to control furnace O2, if there is insufficient O2 (oxygen reducing environment) it can cause tube inbrittlement.
