Acidic attack is typically a general, overall wasting of metal. Pitting is usually the result of oxygen, but can also be due to galvanic corrosion. If there are copper return lines, you can (not nearly always, but can) get dissolved copper back in the steel boiler where it will plate-out, resulting in pitting that is very much like that from oxygen.
