Bob, what you experienced was a furnace explosion due to improper purging. Some furnace explosions are so severe the pressure retaining parts of the boiler will rupture and then all hell breaks loose. The boiler MUST be purged for several minutes before lighting-off. You also have to make sure you don't have a residual build-up of fuel in the furnace. e-mail me with some specifics about the boiler and I can give you some additional directions to save your butt in the future. You are lucky to be alive.
