Main Vents for my Steam Heating System

I have a 2 year old oil burning steam furnace system. One of the 2 main vents in my basement began leaking water just this past week, so I noted the size and type and went to my local plumbing supply shop.

My existing vent is a #6 straight vent attached to my pipe by a series of 3 reducers. The other vent (which isn't leaking) is the same style/size/vent #.

The plumbing supply house told me I was crazy to put a #6 MAIN vent on my system, and recommended a 90-1 unit and told me to remove all the reducers.

Do you agree? Would there ever be a reason for someone using #6 main vents?

Thank you for your help

Jeff
