The low water cut out both sounds an alarm and cuts fuel flow to the burners. I've often wondered that we don't have an alarm set a bit higher than the fuel cut off to warn that the water level is dropping, but we don't. Unless the poor operator just happens to be watching the indicator, his first sign that the water is dropping is when the boiler goes off line!

We do, at least, have a low water pressure alarm on the feedwater system to warn that the feedpump has quit. This allows a few moments to get another pump going before the boiler drops off altogether.
