Many old boilers were designed with controls to keep them warm so expansion and contraction wouldn't make drips in seals if the boiler stayed relatively warm within a range. Draining the boiler could have made it cold to cause the leak and then resealed when used. It is safe to use a boiler if the safety controls are working correctly and there is water in the boiler.
