Before you go further, call Smith to have them explain the warrantee conditions for their 1903 boiler. See if changing the insulation from asbestos to other voids the warranty, as no other damage was done as long as the boiler doesn't leak from a section that you cracked.
It is the contractor's claim that changing the insulation without doing anything other than changing insulation. He has to prove that the boiler is damaged, not just declare it so. He isn't the factory agent. There is no honor in satisfying a fraud.
