The process that gives cast-iron radiators their long life is the self-sealing and protecting action of a rust coating so oxygen and acid can't get to the fresh iron metal under the rust layer. Cleanliness is nice; but the dirty layer of rust is better.
As suggested, flushing the loose excess is a good idea; but acid washing the rust away can make the radiator leak.
