+++ You are probably looking at the Two-Pipe drawing in reverse. All pictures on my site have the pump moviing water away from the expansion tank (pump-away configuration.) You are probably looking at the flow control valve (weighted anti-gravity-flow check valve) as a zone valve.
With 1/2-inch lines however, gravity flow would hardly exist, so the zone valve can go on either side, - supply or return riser.
