loud banging when filling steam boiler

Whenever I open up the valve to add water to my steam boiler, the copper water supply pipe shakes and bangs incredibly LOUD. Is this particular to steam boilers?

I know that water pipes can bang when you close a valve but this one goes nuts when I open it!
