New wood boiler owner

I just purchased my first wood burner and would really appreciate a few tips or suggestions.

1.) I have found numerous manufacturers of insulated pipe and need some advice. What brand works best? Has anyone been successful making their own? Any pictures?
Is there a rule of thumb for heat loss over distance? What suggestions do you have for the minimum depth? Why?

2.) Has anyone built a roof over the concrete pad so they don't have to stand in the rain? Pictures? I am looking for ideas.........

3.) Would the north east side of my house be a good location for the installation? Has anyone had problems with smoke invading the house?
