You just didn't notice before. Boiler-heated baseboard had been designed to give off heat at 180F or above for more than half a century. Before that steam heated radiators at 215F. It is only within the past 20 years that it has been common to provide heat at 140F or less water temperatures.
If you don't like the radiation getting that hot, double the length of the baseboard and it will only have to get to 140F to heat your home.
