home boiler vents if set above 70 degrees

I have a older model peerless boiler at least 10-15 yrs old...when the thermostat is set above 70 degrees the temp gauge goes into the red and the boiler vents out and shuts down..i know by doing this its doing its job..but i cant put it above 70 degrees please help..
