Replacing a zone valve with a manual valve is not planning ahead, as changing heat demads with the weather means running up and down to adjust a manual valve.

It could be that the previous references didn't include moving pictures.
If you don't have purge valves, install a tee and boiler drain or purge cock at the cold side of the zone valve. The previous installer must have gotne the air out by some means, probably a working air vent at a high point.
