Last spring I noticed soot covering a semi-circle area on the roof shingles, circling the chimney. The chimney in on the outside of the house.
This summer the problem got a lot worse. The semi-circle is now about 15 ft. in diameter and the soot is much thicker.
The oil fired boiler (Utica - for HWBB and DHW)is vented into the chimney. Nothing else uses the chimney. An original fireplace was sealed and covered over about 10 years ago.
Where should I look first?
Are draft inducers installed at the chimney top as well as along the pipe? I also have a 12 foot long flue pipe sloped at 8% running from the boiler to the chimney.
Could it be than an afterdrip from the burner is gathering and igniting extra oil upon startup? Would the addition of a delay oil solenoid help reduce the soot?
Thanks
