If you are talking steam, most anything is good. There are some lighter weight steel boilers built to be the cheapest available. The big thing with them is that they won't tolerate much abuse as in leaks onto them, damp basements or system leaks adding corrosive new water. Hot water boilers - there is a lot of modern attempts at saving energy as in pulse combustion, proprietary controls etc. I would stick to more traditional designs and let someone else play with them for 5-10 years first, especially for someone that might have to find service and parts later. I would go for sealed combustion in a lot of bldgs.
