Bleeding the system

I had to repair a small leak in one of the baseboard radiator so I closed the supply valve to the system and drained it.
I am now ready to refill the system which has 3 zones motorized valves that I opened manually.
When I reopen the supply valve to let water back in the system I hear no water rushing into it.
I tried running the pump (without heat) but still I dont think the water is getting in.
This is a water lubricated pump and it says not to run it dry.
Can anyone help?
