The point is to not add any more fresh water than you can. You 'blowdown' a half-gallon once a month from the various places and if it is manually fed, add just enough water. Search the forum page for "blowdown" and search for sites on steam boiler +maintenance. If the boiler has not been maintained, a good flushing, perhaps with a chemical treatment may be in order to clear the bottom of the boiler.
