That is exactly what it was -- the single knock (and several other radiators with a few knocks during the cycle) were dragging across the wood floor as they expanded. But they didn't drag smoothly -- it was like a mini-earthquake, when enough force built up the radiator slid a little bit causing a bang.
I put some of those pads that you use on the bottom of furniture to stop it from scratching your wood floors, and the knocks went away like magic.
