jtown is correct. A modern gas boiler is built to accept clean flame. Wood and coal make fly ash; that is why the wood boiler is so large, it requires wide open passages to pass the ash. It is also the reason the wood boiler was manufactured at 45% efficiency. Burning wood to pass through a gas heat exchanger would clog the boiler up in a few days.
