Thin margins? - I am not sure. Assuming the district energy facilities are using alternative (cheap) fuel such as biomass or wood chips, the returns could be quite decent with the current fuel prices.

As for large companies bulldozing their way in, that is exactly what seems to be happening (at least it seems that way to me). Duke, NRG, Cinergy, Enron are all investing big time in district energy. Why?
